Facebook becomes Meta

On 28 October 2021 Facebook renamed its parent company Meta Platforms and committed tens of billions of dollars to the 'metaverse'. The rebrand followed the Facebook Files, an investigation built on documents from whistleblower Frances Haugen showing the company's own research into the harms of its products. The metaverse bet was quietly deprioritised within three years as attention and capital moved to generative AI.
