War, hunger and mutiny topple the monarchy in February 1917; the provisional government continues the war and is overthrown by Lenin's Bolsheviks in October. Civil war follows until 1922, with famine and terror on all sides. The result is the first state founded on Marxist principles, and for seventy years an alternative model of industrial modernity that shaped politics in every country on Earth, including those opposing it.
