Mussolini takes power in 1922 and Hitler is appointed chancellor in January 1933, dismantling the Weimar Republic within months through emergency decree. Fascism combines ultranationalism, a cult of the leader, contempt for parliamentary politics, and organised violence against the left and against minorities. Both regimes come to power through the mechanisms of the states they then destroy, which is the part that has not stopped being relevant.
