Baird demonstrates a mechanical system in 1926 and Farnsworth an all-electronic one in 1927; regular high-definition broadcasting begins in Britain in 1936. Development is interrupted by the war and resumes as a mass medium afterwards. Its distinguishing feature is simultaneity — millions of people receiving the same images at the same moment — which reshapes politics, advertising and shared experience.
