Collectivisation from 1929 destroys peasant agriculture and produces famine across the Soviet Union in 1932 and 1933, killing millions; the Ukrainian portion, the Holodomor, is recognised by many states as genocide. The Great Purge of 1936 to 1938 executes hundreds of thousands including most of the senior military command, and the Gulag system holds millions. Industrialisation is achieved at a cost that its own planners recorded.
