From 1915 the Ottoman government arrests Armenian intellectuals, conscripts and kills men, and deports the remaining population into the Syrian desert on marches designed to be lethal. Around a million to 1.5 million die. It is the case for which Raphael Lemkin later coined the word genocide, and the Turkish state's continuing denial of the characterisation remains a live diplomatic issue more than a century later.
