Avicenna completes the Canon around 1025, organising all known medicine into a system covering physiology, pathology, hygiene, pharmacology and treatment, with 760 drugs described and clear rules for testing them. It is used in European medical schools into the seventeenth century. He is also a major philosopher, whose argument from contingency for a necessary being enters Christian and Jewish thought through translation.
