Teotihuacan in the Valley of Mexico grows from around 100 BCE into a planned city of perhaps 125,000 covering 20 square kilometres, with the Pyramid of the Sun, a grid of multi-family apartment compounds housing craft specialists, and neighbourhoods of resident foreigners. It has no identifiable royal portraits, no named rulers and no deciphered writing. Its influence reaches deep into Maya politics. It burns around 550 CE.
