Between roughly 1.1 and 0.9 billion years ago the cratons converge into Rodinia, with Laurentia — the core of North America — near its centre. Its name comes from the Russian for 'to beget', because the continents we know were born from its breakup. Rodinia's later rifting is closely tied to the extreme glaciations and the explosion of complex life that follow.
