From about 1.25 to 0.98 billion years ago, continental collision raises a mountain belt whose eroded roots run through eastern North America and are traceable into Europe and beyond. It is the defining event in Rodinia's assembly. The Adirondacks and much of the Canadian Shield's southern edge are Grenville rock, and the belt is the yardstick against which Mesoproterozoic tectonics worldwide is measured.
