Paul, having persecuted the early movement, undergoes a conversion and spends decades travelling the eastern Mediterranean founding congregations. His decisive argument — that gentiles need not become Jews, keep the law or be circumcised to join — turns a Jewish sect into something anyone could enter. His letters are the earliest Christian writings we have, predating the gospels, and they do more than any other text to define Christian theology.
