Monsoon rains between June and August 2022 delivered nearly three times the thirty-year average, and glacial melt from a record heatwave arrived at the same time. About a third of Pakistan was inundated, some 1,700 people died and 33 million were affected. Pakistan contributes under 1% of global emissions; the disaster became the central argument for the loss-and-damage fund agreed at COP27 that November.
