Founded around 427 CE in Bihar, Nalanda grows into a residential university with thousands of students and teachers, libraries reported to fill several multi-storey buildings, and an entrance examination. It teaches Buddhist philosophy alongside logic, grammar, medicine and mathematics, and attracts scholars from China, Korea, Tibet and Central Asia — the accounts of the Chinese pilgrims Xuanzang and Yijing are a major source for Indian history.
