With the era of major mergers over, gas cools and settles into a thin, ordered, rotating disk where star formation continues quietly to the present. Its stars are younger and richer in heavy elements than the thick disk's, and they orbit on nearly circular paths. The Sun is one of them. The spiral arms are density waves passing through this disk rather than fixed structures.
