Kublai completes the conquest of Song China by 1279 and rules as emperor of the Yuan dynasty, keeping Mongol military dominance while adopting Chinese administrative forms. His two invasions of Japan in 1274 and 1281 are destroyed by typhoons the Japanese called kamikaze, divine winds — the second fleet was one of the largest naval operations attempted before the twentieth century. The Yuan fall to rebellion in 1368.
