Aquinas, working from the newly translated Aristotle that had reached Europe through Arabic and then Latin, argues that reason and faith address the same reality by different routes and that philosophy is not a threat to theology. The Summa Theologiae is structured as objections, response and reply to each objection — the strongest case against his own position stated first. Some of his propositions were condemned in Paris in 1277; he was canonised in 1323.
