The earliest known quasar, seen 670 million years after the Big Bang, outshines the Milky Way a thousand times over and is driving an outflow of gas at a fifth of the speed of light. Its black hole is too massive to have grown from a stellar remnant even at the theoretical maximum accretion rate, which forces its seed to have been enormous from the start.
