Kilby at Texas Instruments and Noyce at Fairchild independently produce integrated circuits in 1958 and 1959; Noyce's planar process is the one that scales. In 1965 Gordon Moore observes that the number of components per chip has been doubling roughly annually and predicts it will continue — a projection that held for half a century and functioned as an industry roadmap, making it partly self-fulfilling.
