Launched 16 November 2022 after years of delay, Artemis I sent an uncrewed Orion capsule 430,000 kilometres from Earth — further than any spacecraft built for humans had gone — and returned it through a 2,760C re-entry on 11 December. The Space Launch System worked on its first flight. The mission cleared the way for Artemis II to carry a crew.
