The novel comes of age

Cheap printing, rising literacy and serial publication in magazines create a large paying readership, and the nineteenth-century novel becomes the dominant form for examining society and interior life. Dickens is read aloud to families and campaigns through fiction; Eliot analyses provincial moral life; Tolstoy and Dostoevsky work at a scale and psychological depth that has not been surpassed. Many were first read a chapter at a time.
