Faraday demonstrates electromagnetic induction in 1831 — the principle behind every generator and transformer in use today. Largely self-taught and poor at mathematics, he thinks in terms of fields of force filling space rather than action at a distance, an idea colleagues found unrigorous and which turns out to be the deeper description. Maxwell later gives it mathematical form.
