With the Ming collapsing under rebellion, Manchu forces enter Beijing in 1644 and establish the Qing. They impose the queue hairstyle on Han men on pain of death while adopting Chinese administrative institutions and Confucian legitimacy. Under Kangxi and Qianlong the empire roughly doubles in territory, incorporating Taiwan, Mongolia, Xinjiang and Tibet, and the population grows from around 150 to over 300 million.
