Pele died on 29 December 2022, eleven days after Argentina won the World Cup. He scored over a thousand goals, won in 1958, 1962 and 1970, and was declared a national treasure by Brazil partly to stop European clubs signing him. Brazil held three days of mourning and his coffin lay in state on the pitch at Santos.
