The Narmer Palette, from around 3100 BCE, shows a king wearing the white crown of Upper Egypt on one face and the red crown of Lower Egypt on the other, smiting an enemy. Whether it records an actual conquest or commemorates a longer process is debated, but the unification is real and unusually durable: Egypt becomes a single territorial state with a divine king, a capital at Memphis, and an ideology of order against chaos that persists essentially unbroken.
