Muhammad receives what Muslims hold to be revelations from around 610 CE, preaching strict monotheism, social justice and the coming judgement in a polytheistic trading city. Persecuted, he and his followers migrate to Medina in 622 — the Hijra, from which the Islamic calendar counts — where he becomes a political and military leader as well as a prophet. By his death in 632 most of Arabia is united under the new faith.
