The Linearbandkeramik, named for the incised bands on its pottery, expands from Hungary to the Paris basin and the Ukrainian border between about 5500 and 4900 BCE — remarkably fast, and remarkably uniform in its timber longhouses, pottery and choice of fertile loess soils. It represents the main wave of farming settlement in temperate Europe. It also produces some of the earliest unambiguous evidence of organised massacre.
