North Korea invades in June 1950; UN forces under American command push almost to the Chinese border, China intervenes with hundreds of thousands of troops, and the line stabilises near the original border. Perhaps three million die, over half of them Korean civilians. The armistice of 1953 has never been replaced by a peace treaty, and the division it froze remains one of the most militarised borders on Earth.
