As Egyptian control of Nubia fails after 1070 BCE, a Kushite kingdom forms around Napata, adopting Egyptian gods, script and pyramid burial while remaining politically independent. It grows wealthy on gold, ivory and control of the Nile trade. Its pyramids are steeper and more numerous than Egypt's — Sudan contains more pyramids than any country in the world.
