The first cynodonts

Cynodonts arise in the Late Permian with enlarged jaw muscles, a complete secondary palate, differentiated teeth and a dentary bone growing at the expense of the other jaw bones. Those receding bones eventually migrate into the middle ear to become the mammalian ossicles. Cynodonts survive the end-Permian catastrophe and, roughly fifty million years later, give rise to mammals.
