Era
Carboniferous, Paleozoic

The period closes at 358.86 million years ago. In sixty million years plants have gone from centimetre-tall stems to thirty-metre trees with roots and seeds, insects have appeared, and vertebrates have grown limbs. The Carboniferous that follows takes those forests and buries them, producing the coal that will one day power an industrial revolution.
