Talas and the spread of paper

Abbasid and Tang armies meet at Talas in 751 CE, and the Chinese are defeated. Tradition holds that captured Chinese papermakers introduced the craft to Samarkand, from where it spread to Baghdad, Damascus, Cairo and eventually Europe. The story may be simplified, but the timing fits: paper mills appear across the Islamic world in the following decades, and cheap paper underwrites the scholarly explosion that follows.
