Linen and the loom

Flax is among the founder crops and is grown for fibre rather than food. Linen fragments and impressions appear across the Neolithic Near East and Europe, and loom weights become one of the commonest finds in excavated houses. Weaving is a slow, skilled, largely domestic industry that consumes an enormous share of household labour; wool joins it much later, with the secondary products revolution.
