Tutankhamun takes the throne as a child around 1332 BCE, abandons Amarna, restores the cult of Amun and dies at about nineteen. He is historically unimportant. He matters because his small tomb was covered by debris from a later excavation and escaped systematic robbery, so when Howard Carter opened it in 1922 it contained over 5,000 objects — the only substantially intact royal burial ever found, and the basis of most popular images of Egypt.
