A military coup against the Republic in 1936 becomes a three-year war with Germany and Italy supplying Franco and the Soviet Union supplying the Republic, while international brigades of volunteers fight on the Republican side. Guernica is bombed from the air in 1937, an early demonstration of deliberate attack on a civilian town, and Picasso's painting makes it the emblem of it. Franco wins and rules until 1975.
