- Devonian, Paleozoic
The period closes at 419.62 million years ago. In twenty-three million years vascular plants have appeared, arthropods have taken to the air-breathing life, jawed fish have radiated, and the bony fish have split into the two great branches. The Devonian that follows will turn these beginnings into forests, insects and the first animals with legs.
