Archaeology shows continuous occupation of the Palatine from around the tenth century BCE and a recognisable urban centre by the seventh, so the traditional founding date of 753 BCE is roughly the right era for the coalescence of the village settlements into a city. The Romulus and Remus story is later mythology. Early Rome is ruled by kings, heavily influenced by its Etruscan neighbours, and entirely unremarkable among central Italian towns.
