Sugar cultivation moves from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic islands and then to Brazil and the Caribbean, and the plantation form that develops — large monoculture estates worked by enslaved gangs under overseers, producing for distant markets — becomes the template for tobacco, coffee and cotton. Barbados and Saint-Domingue generate immense wealth. Mortality was such that some islands required continual importation simply to maintain their enslaved populations.
