Babur, a Timurid prince, defeats the Delhi Sultanate at Panipat in 1526 using field artillery and mobile cavalry. His grandson Akbar consolidates an empire of enormous wealth and, unusually, abolishes the tax on non-Muslims, holds interreligious debates at court and attempts a syncretic imperial faith. At its height the Mughal economy produces roughly a quarter of world manufacturing output.
