Excavated from 2019, Karahan Tepe lies 35 kilometres from Gobekli Tepe and shares its T-shaped pillars and enclosures, with some deposits possibly older. Its most striking space is a room cut into bedrock containing eleven phallic pillars and a human head with a serpentine neck emerging from the wall. It is one of roughly a dozen related sites now known across the region, which recast Gobekli Tepe from a unique anomaly into one node of a whole culture.
