Assembly begins in 1998 and the station has been permanently crewed since November 2000 — the longest continuous human presence off Earth. It is built by the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada working together through periods when their governments were barely speaking. It has hosted thousands of experiments, and it is scheduled to be deorbited around 2030.
