The Guptas rule northern India from around 320 CE with a lighter administrative hand than the Mauryas, presiding over Kalidasa's poetry and drama, the Ajanta cave paintings, temple architecture that sets the pattern for centuries, and mathematics of the first order. The Chinese pilgrim Faxian travels through and reports a prosperous and orderly country. The empire fragments under Huna invasions in the sixth century.
