Extinction becomes visible

The passenger pigeon numbered in the billions and was the most abundant bird in North America; the last one died in Cincinnati Zoo in 1914. The last known thylacine died in Hobart in 1936. Both were driven to extinction deliberately or carelessly within living memory, and both were documented. Yellowstone had been designated in 1872 and national parks spread from there — conservation as a response to demonstrated loss.
