Earth begins to form

Runaway accretion builds planetary embryos, which then collide with one another in giant impacts. Earth reaches most of its final mass within about 30 to 50 million years — geologically almost instantaneous. Each impact adds heat, and the growing planet is molten rather than solid for much of this time.
