The floor of the southern North Sea is dry land through the glacial: gently rolling hills, wooded valleys, lagoons and the great river system draining the Rhine and Thames. Trawlers still bring up mammoth bone, peat and Mesolithic harpoons from it. As the ice melts it is progressively drowned, and its final inundation around 8,000 years ago — accelerated by a tsunami from the Storegga submarine landslide — separates Britain from the continent for the last time.
